Approximately 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they announced in a release.

Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.

Police then found numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no indication as to where it came from; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.

Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the public for details.

A high-ranking official said the attack rendered him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the killing of nine people by a shooter aiming at residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
