Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these treatments must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
