Colombia's Leader Warns 'I Will Take Up Arms Again' if United States Launches an Attack.

Donald Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the tone in their verbal conflict, increasing strains bilaterally after American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He has narcotics facilities and production sites and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Growing Tensions coupled with Allegations

Talking to reporters over the weekend, the US president suggested similar armed intervention towards the South American nation, asserting the country is also "very ill" and “run by a sick man who likes making narcotics and selling it to the US."

While Colombia is the globe's biggest cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is directly connected to the business.

A Deteriorating Alliance

Colombia for decades served as a staunch collaborator of the US in the campaign against drug trafficking and benefited from bipartisan support from American politicians, but relations have soured dramatically since Trump came to office.

The nation's drug trade is largely controlled by illegal armed groups such as one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members laid down arms subsequent to a landmark accord.

Colombia's Firm Answer

When asked if armed intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea to me personally."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the 1990s, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am neither an illegitimate leader nor am I involved in narcotics," he affirmed.

"The US president speaks without information. Stop slandering me," he expressed in a post.

"Should American forces attack rural communities, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the hills. If they capture the president, whom a large part of Colombians holds in high esteem, they will release the powerful force of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man participating with the radical M-19 armed organization but is not believed to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he participated in creating the constitutional rewrite in 1991 subsequently becoming an influential politician. He served as mayor of Bogotá prior to his election the presidency.

"I swore not to touch a gun ... but for Colombia I would take up the fight," he vowed.

Reinforced Protection along with Broad Opposition

The Colombian defence minister stated that Petro's personal security had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with the US president, however, leaders spanning Colombian politics have denounced the possibility of a US attack targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Pressure

The US revoked the president's entry visa after he urged US military personnel to refuse unlawful commands. In October, it placed asset freezes against the president, his spouse and several associates.

Concurrently while America bolstered its troop levels in the Caribbean and striking alleged narcotics traffickers against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed strikes on maritime targets off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
